Cellphones and Cars – Necessity or Distraction?
Operating a motor vehicle while distracted can quickly lead to tragic loss of life, severe injuries, significant property damage and expensive financial consequences. Given the level of distraction that may come with using cellphones and cars, you must always avoid doing so when you’re behind the wheel.
However, in the modern world, cellphones have become an essential part of daily life. These mobile devices can do far more than make phone calls, and their far-reaching capabilities may make them vital in navigating various tasks and responsibilities. This makes it necessary for you, as a responsible motorist, to understand how and when and how it’s okay to use your cellphone.
Cellphones and Cars Safety Tips
As an overarching rule, you should never avert your eyes from the road to your cellphone while driving. Even briefly looking down at a text or fumbling to reach your phone could lead to severe accidents. If you must use your mobile devices, consider the following tips:
- Set it up before you start driving. If you’re using your cellphone as a GPS or music player, make sure you’ve entered your destination or set your playlist before you start your engine and do not make any adjustments while your vehicle is in motion.
- Go hands-free. If you must use your phone while driving, use hands-free options, such as mounts that may attach to your vehicle’s dashboard or voice control software. When communicating while in motion, use voice commands to make a phone call rather than attempting to type a text message.
- Pull over. If an urgent matter demands immediate attention or use of your cellphone, find a safe place to pull your vehicle over and turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers. Never continue driving while using your device, even if it’s only for a moment.
- Keep it out of reach. If you struggle to control the temptation to look at your device while driving, consider putting it in the backseat, trunk or otherwise out of sight and beyond your reach.
